Dr. Alexander Hird
GENERAL DENTIST, PRINCIPAL
Dr. Hird joined White Rock Dental in 2005 two years after graduating from the University of Western Ontario. He is of British and Colombian ancestry, and the son of an engineer and an artist. He grew up in the foothills and Rocky mountains of southern Alberta, surrounded by a vibrant and hard-working Hispanic community. This all shaped his warm and approachable style of practice.
His risk-based approach to dentistry focuses on understanding each patient's unique needs and values, and uses the best-available evidence to manage the risk factors impacting their immediate and long-term oral health. This underpins all levels of care, from urgent to complete dentistry.
Dr. Hird delivers comprehensive and responsive oral health care that is informed by his varied professional background. He began his career as a hospital resident dentist in 2003 at Vancouver Coast Health after being recruited by former White Rock Dental partner, Dr. Allan Hovan, which inspired his interest in community dentistry and professional service. He worked as a hospital staff dentist at Vancouver Coastal Health from 2005 to 2012, continuing to treat medically complex patients part time; he also worked as a public health dentist with rotations in Haida Gwaii and Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. For ten years, he taught as a clinical instructor at the UBC Faculty of Dentistry until 2017, and since 2014 he has mentored visiting dentists in digital (CAD/CAM) dentistry at the Spear Campus in Scottsdale, Arizona.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Hird cares about advancing the standards and quality of oral health care within the broader health system. He has a strong interest in health policy and administration. For over twelve years he served as chair and member of senior committees, and later as a board member, at the BC Dental Regulator. In 2022, he was appointed by the BC Health Minister as a founding board member of the newly created oral health professions regulator in BC, the BC College of Oral Health Professionals. He is also an examiner for the National Dental Examining Board of Canada, and his service to the profession was recognized in 2017 by the International College of Dentists. Dr. Hird is a graduate of the Kois Center in Seattle, Washington State, and also holds a Master degree in Health Economics, Policy and Management (2020) from the London School of Economics in London UK.
Dr. Hird also speaks Spanish.
